Are you a trail blazer or a travel agent? That question posed by John Maxwell really hits to the heart of leadership. A trail blazer goes where others haven’t been and makes a path for others to follow. Another way of saying it is they are willing to go where they are sending others. A travel agent sends people where they hear things are great, but they haven’t been there themselves.

Paul says it this way in writing to the church in Corinth. (1 Cor 11:1 – my paraphrase) Follow me as I am following Christ! He was willing to set an example for others to emulate.

Make sure that you are leading in a way and to a place that is worthwhile for others to come. Believe it or not, there are more people watching you than you realize and if they are willing to make the journey with you, make sure that the destination is worth the trip. And by all means, don’t try and send somebody where you are unwilling to go yourself. After all, you are setting the example. That’s part of what leadership is.
